In Preparation for the Death of Me

When I die, I want to be cremated and I want people to drink me in a shake.
This is my memorial. I will live on inside the beings of others. They will not only carry me in their memory, but in their very fiber. May everything that I have been and done, nourish you.

This is what I’ve always wanted. And if you need a shrine for people to visit, you can build one… in a park. Or people can go visit my plaque at the Santa Monica Public Library.

Cemeteries are supposed to be that, places of beauty where people come to honor and remember those passed. But they’re all crammed in there together all those boxes of bones. And it’s valuable real-estate. What a waste, it’s one ritual I cannot get behind.

I do like the viewing of the dead, as a formalized part of the ceremony. It’s cool to see the face of a person without their spirit inside. I always stop to be with dead birds and other lifeless carcasses on the side of the road, for that very reason. It's amazing to me that this collection of flesh and wing once flew! The ultimate expression of living… flight. And now, nothing, not even a blink.

{Maybe at my wake, the one where everyone is drinking me, there could be a slide show of pictures of me dead too. Although that’s probably not as effective as seeing my lifeless body up close – but by the time I die, my body won’t interest you, so yeah, let’s go with the slideshow.}

I’ve always said that “death is for the living.” Because the person who is dead is no longer affected by this reality, has no concerns here, their life is complete in this dimension. It’s an event for the people who remain. To assimilate, to negotiate, dance through and process.

And I have never been one for convention. So, I’m creating my own funeral, my own death and a bit of humor and sustainability for those who remain.

Drink me and smile. Remember to be healthy (that’s why I’m being imbibed in a protein shake) and acknowledge those you walk with, as you are doing now for me – anything you meant to say, I hear it now, we are complete. And never forget to laugh.

WOW – what a year! Anybody? Bueller?

Some years I sit down to write this letter and it all seems so UNFUNNY. And part of my commitment in this ritual is to inspire laughter.

So, send in the clowns, cue the dancing monkeys, raise John Belushi from the dead, because we need to bring some humor to a very intense and growth inspiring year.

Maybe we can make this an interactive letter? In fact… it is!

As soon as you read this, or skim this, or look at the pictures, or satisfactorily pretend to do some combination of all of the above, please send your mailing address and your birth date to me at andrea@shree.tv.

Why? Well, that could be a very short story, but because this is The Holiday Letter I will make it a long, drawn out and hopefully entertaining story instead.

1976 will always be remembered as a year of celebration, it was the bicentennial.

Okay, no, not that long. Let’s just start with Bhakti Fest.

2009 will forever be known as the year I worked on Bhakti Fest. My title was co-producer and I did everything from sponsor relations to graphic design. I worked diligently with a passionate team of friends to deliver a unique Yoga and Spiritual weekend this past September in Joshua Tree, California. When we began the project, our goal was to have eight hundred guests. By May, five hundred tickets had been sold and it was clear this would be bigger than any of us imagined.

We delivered an extraordinarily fun and successful weekend to well over 2000 people.

Probably my greatest breakthrough of the journey was the first time I witnessed Saul David Raye singing Kirtan. I’ve always known Saul to be a gifted yoga and thai yoga massage teacher. But seeing him in this new light, where he shone so brightly, it occurred to me that it was okay to be many things in one life. To have many talents and go through lots of incarnations. It allowed me to appreciate my own gifts as a producer instead of always brushing them under the rug as something I needed to do to pay the rent. (HAHAHAHAHA! Right? Remember this is supposed to be funny.) I’m grateful to Bhakti Fest for this and many lessons and especially for deepening my relationship with some of the most beautiful souls I have ever known!

The year was also marked by key events like the Shreeman Family Reunion this past June in Detroit. Yes, it happened! My father was reconnected with cousins he had not seen or talked to since his wedding 45 years ago. And the Shreeman family feud was put to rest when on her 80^th birthday, my cousin Bertha walked into our first reunion event with her sister Janet and made peace. Not a mascara-running gushy show, but a handshake, a hello and an acknowledgement that yes, we are family. (cue Pointer Sisters)

This event was so warm and satisfying due especially to the generosity and love of the Detroit Shreemans, Meisners and Kaplans. It was the first time I felt like I had given something to my father that he could truly appreciate. (Not to discount my fabulous taste in ties, coffee mugs and sweatshirts.)

2009 also delivered the great surprise of Eve-olution. Approximately 16 years ago I met a very talented theater producer by the name of Mark Kaplan. We kept in touch, loosely, with a lunch here and there. Well, imagine my joy when Mark contacts me out of the blue to say he has a play for me to read. The first time I read it, I sat in tears as I closed the play and thought, “Well, I could do either role, but I sure hope he wants me to play Liza!” And indeed he did.

Mark scoured Los Angeles for a worthy stage partner and behold, he found Kelly Hawthorne who moved me beyond words in her portrayal of Alison. I played a fun-loving mother of four, married to a sexy French filmmaker, who has a nervous breakdown. (Wouldn’t YOU think of me?!) The icing on this cake came when I contacted the playwright. She was so thrilled and vindicated by my reaching out to her. I guess the original production didn’t fulfill her vision entirely. But ours was a big hit and touched all the right chords for our audiences.

Another deeply planted seed blossomed this year when I began working with Inside Out Community Arts as an Artist Leader. I had known the former Executive Director Jonathan Zeichner for twelve years, again, loosely. But it wasn’t until the end of 2008 that I jumped into a twenty week training to learn the thorough and powerful arts curriculum that Inside Out provides for underserved middle schoolers. Once I got the stamp of approval, they unleashed me on my own group of kids, twice! I directed one play about Single Parenting (kids choice) and one about Teen Pregnancy (again, kids choice) with the partnership of my awesome co-directors Megan and Mimi. Inside Out is an award-winning organization with integrity and vision based in Venice, California. They do great work across Los Angeles and also license their curriculum around the world. www.insideoutca.org

This year ended with a power-packed and meditative month of December. I know, it sounds oxymoronic but I shall explain. There were four shows in December, two of which I acted in, one I directed and one I produced. Amid that excitement, I was able to sneak a wonderful trip home to hunker down for an east coast snow storm with my amazing family. We played scrabble, drank hot chocolate, went sledding and shared the glowing lights of Hanukkah.

On the flight home from Virginia I finished reading a wonderful book – and this is the reason I am asking for your addresses and birth dates.

The book entitled, A Princess Found, is written by my dear friend Sarah Culberson and her writing partner Tracy Trivas. It's about Sarah gaining the courage to search for her birth father (at age 28), discovering he is of a ruling family in Sierra Leone and her deep commitment to rebuilding his war-torn village of Bumpe. I learned so much about being unstoppable, about trusting the signs and about diving into your natural place in the world. She also touched on the rich customs of both her adopted West Virginia family and her newly discovered African birth family. Post Fest 1/2 Day Retreat and Clean Up

I really cannot believe that what I've been working on for the last 12 months is what just happened. I am blown away by all the love, connectedness, delicious food, great community, great music, devotional teachings, commitment from musicians and yoga leaders and volunteers. The coming together of so many inspiring individuals very much including our paying guests to ignite and sustain a weekend of joy.

Here are some of the things I heard from people:
"This is the best festival I have ever been to."
"The people here are all so nice."
"Can you please fix my microphone!"
"Where do I sign up for next year!"
"You're doing this again next year, right?"
"This is so amazing."
"What a beautiful event."
"This is first year event?! No way!"
"Congratulations, this is an enormous success."

So now on to the cleaning up, the powering down, the taking stock, the debrief, the crossing of t's and dotting of i's.

Every once in a while I looked at something this weekend, a vendor booth with beautiful clothing, a yoga leader setting her stage, a guest bobbing his feet in the meditation patio pool and thought... "I wonder what it would feel like to be them, to look at this festival at this room, to hear this music as a guest." They all looked so happy and peaceful and pleased and free.

But I'm glad I'm not them.
I'm glad I'm the one who created it for them.
Created the opportunity for their freedom.
The one who was called by Kenneth in October 2008 to meet Sri in a Hollywood coffee shop. The one who dove in to become the Co-Producer whose accountability ranged from acquiring sponsors to branding, from yoga hall management to driving trash.

This has been an incredible weekend, a beautiful journey and an enlightening year.

Lots of familiar faces and of course new ones beginning to populate this beckoning corner of Joshua Tree. Vendors and Sponsors ... CREATIVE, beautiful spaces being created.
Volunteers ... hard working, positive.
Staff ... BUSY!
Pockets of spontaneous music making and yoga-ness already in process.

These are some of the longest days I have ever lived but I have to say, they feel great! I couldn't sleep if I wanted to. Excitement and sense of responsibility is running too high.

The most exciting part of today is watching the environment grow, the stage finished, the rugs placed, the backdrops lifted, the vendor booths decorated. A small city is taking shape.

Double wow and now... the shower calls.

Bhakti Fest and Yoga Aid are here!

On September 10th Bhakti Fest kicks off in Joshua Tree, CA. Part of this first year festival's intent is to stimulate a cycle of giving. 50% of net proceeds from Bhakti Fest will benefit 4 non-profit organizations and the Closing Yoga Ceremony of the fest is Yoga Aid, a 2 hour All-Star Yoga Practice for charity.

I will be practicing for Foundation for Women, an organization that has brought women in impoverished countries out of poverty through microcredit. I love how microcredit is uplifting on all sides and stimulates exponential abundance.

Summer in the Bhav - An update from ShreeWorld

Hello from Southern California, which I have come to realize does not have the best summers.

I'm back in my sweet spot, NE Santa Monica, north of Wilshire near 26th Street and it is cool here in the summer.

Last weekend, a dream of mine came to fruition. Alan Shreeman, my father, reconnected with his first cousins Edie Kaplan and Lilly Meisner for the first time in 45 years. We were in Michigan where they have a real summer. It was hot and humid and lush green and full of family fun. My dad even met first cousins he never even knew he had. Shreeman Family Reunion receives a grade S for Success!

Also receiving a grade S is Eve-olution which closed after breaking box office records at Rep East Playhouse in Newhall. Rumors are that Eve will re-open in LA sometime this fall.

In the meantime, if you are jonesing to see me in action - check out this link. I shot a pilot for Better People at the end of '08 and my character Julia Seaman seems to be making waves in the pitch meetings.

Andrea's Year of Travel in Review

Well well well, the day has finally arrived! (good)

For those of you who have been following my yearly public letter-writing contest, you know that I’m always the winner because there is no one else in the contest. And you also know there was NO letter last year. (bad)

Therefore, I intentionally planned the entire year of 2008 around writing THIS letter. Really, I was thinking about you all year! (good)

At the beginning of 2008, I announced (to myself) that I would travel every month this year; and thus created the perfect structure for my end-o-the-year note to you. Okay this sounds really good, but it’s long, longer than my usual 1 pager, so… (bad)

I averaged 5 days of travel per month and day trips were allowed. So now my friends and family please prepare your selves for:

January - Park City, Utah - 2 weeks
What a way to kick off the year! I spent 2 amazing weeks at the Sundance Film Festival with director Josh Tickell and his groundbreaking film, Fields of Fuel, now titled FUEL. (In 2007 Josh brought me on as Director of Fundraising to help secure finishing funds for FUEL.) Not only did the film WIN the Audience Award for BEST DOCUMENTARY, but… I traveled with the most dedicated, fun and creative team ever, to a truly beautiful spot on our planet where we joyfully ran around the snow-drenched town, educating festival-ites about biofuels and the possibilities of an oil-free America. FUEL has gone on to gather loads of other awards and now screens all over the country. Visit the website for more info, reviews and screening locations.

February - Galveston Island, Texas - 3 days
When my friend J. Karsh called to tell me that Michelle Obama was speaking in Galveston where he had been volunteering on the Obama Campaign, I leapt into action. After landing at Houston Hobby, I drove my rental car right up to the Grand 1894 Opera House where Karsh awaited me with a clipboard and instructions. I helped organize the team of volunteers, captured the name and email of everyone in the audience and then took my seat to listen in awe as Michelle spoke with wit and depth about why she and Barack were committed to a new America. I spent two more days helping out in the office, making phone calls, picking up volunteers and fielding questions from walk-ins. A big shout out to my hostess, Sam B. Ramirez, who took great care of me in her gorgeous Victorian home!

March - Joshua Tree National Park - Day Trip
I’ve been to Jumbo Rocks many times in my day. And it is always spectacular. What made this trek so lovely, was the companionship of great friends: Colin Stuart, Ting Wong, Mahdroo McCaleb and Steve Zelman. Oh yes, and the Dairy Queen stop on the way home!

April - DC/ Roanoke/ Elkins, West Virginia - 7 days
This was the 2nd of my Political Vacations (aka: P-Vac’s). J. Karsh had now been promoted to staff member and re-located to Elkins, West Virginia for the primary campaign and election. This was an exquisitely devised trip where I got to spend Passover with my family before heading off to Elkins where I helped Karsh recruit the local volunteer team that would dash to the campaign finish line with him. Elkins is a small college town tucked away across the Maryland/Virginia border in the NE part of W. Va. Aside from registering toothless, McDonald’s fed, angry Republicans outside of the Walmart, my memories are all fond. The community of Obama supporters was down to earth, smart and passionate. I’ll never forget the rabble of over-achieving high school students who led the volunteer team, or Jean who lives atop Obama Hill with her hound Natalie, or Marilyn, another dear hostess. Much love Elkins! Yes we did!

May - London, Amsterdam, Paris - 2 weeks
One of the courses I took with Landmark Education was, the Team Management and Leadership Program. It’s a global program. So on a whim, I flew to Amsterdam to volunteer on a weekend for the TMLP that serves Europe and the Middle East. I then tooled around on bicycles, the preferred mode of transport in this picturesque city, with new friends Jaap and Alies, as we took in great meals, great shopping and great yoga.

In Paris I visited with old friends Marc and Fabienne who I hadn’t seen since they left LA 8 years ago. Marc opened a place in the 10th District called Bob’s Juice Bar that serves mostly English-speaking clients. He’d love to see you!

In London, I was cared for by another exquisite host, Rors K. who plied me with bus passes and recommendations then drove me out to the lush countryside of Sussex for a proper English supper with his family. With the dollar at its weakest, I was grateful to be hosted generously in every city.

Finally I want to plug Paris in general. The city is majestic. It took me about 35 seconds to understand why the French are so proud. Everything is worth mentioning, but I’ll leave you with my favorite impression, each evening the whole city stops to enjoy the sunset, often with a bottle of wine and always with friends.

June - Newport Beach - Day Trip
Day trip! My mother and father were passing through on their way to a wedding so I spent the night with them in Newport. We saw Groovaloo, an electrifying show that follows the real life experiences of a group of street dancers. Mama and Papa always bring good love.

July - Irvine - Day Trip
This year I began researching my father’s family. When I started, we thought my grandfather had only one brother. Well, it turns out he was one of 9 children. And on Sunday, July 27th I met the first Shreeman I’d ever met outside my immediate family. Diane Shreeman Wertheimer-Gale and I pored over pictures and laughed for hours. She and her wonderful husband Bruce took me to the Jewish Community Center and out for a rockin’ Mexican Brunch. I’ve since met several other members of the hugely extended Shreeman clan, and with a reunion on the table, this tale is best saved for next year.

August - Roanoke, VA - 5 days
In late August, my mother experienced a mild stroke which she prefers to call, the incident. I flew home to be with everyone. Just writing this makes me want to be home right now. Thank you everyone for the outpouring of love and care. Mom is well. She has no residual brain damage and is at work twice a week with an athletic trainer. Go Mom!

September - San Francisco - 4 days
I finally experienced a yoga workshop with John Friend, the founder of Anusara Yoga, which means Flowing with Grace. Fantastic! And to top it off, I introduced John Friend to one of my best mates in the world, John Friend. They both seemed to appreciate the moment.

October-November - Philadelphia/Roanoke - 7 days
This was a very fun trip and the last of my P-Vac’s. Cousin Erica G. married her longtime boyfriend Dave Hadfield. It was one of the best weddings I’ve ever been to. Their well-timed event on November 2nd got me to the East Coast for the election. So I decided to head into Virginia, my hometown of Roanoke, to drive people to the polls and do some last minute canvassing for Barack.

There are those who will tell you that I single-handedly turned Virginia from red to blue for the first time in 44 years. Let’s just say I had a little help. A huge high five to all my new campaign friends, the souls that drifted over from TN, NC, NY, MD and DC to make it happen. We are all blessed by your hard work and passion. I cannot thank everyone enough, and this includes you my dear reader, for doing what you did to cause the spark of transformation that this country, and the world, has been craving. Tally ho!

December - Yucca Valley, CA - Day Trip
I drove out to the desert this week for my first day of work on a new venture that will launch the weekend of September 11th, 2009. I am helping to produce the Joshua Tree Kirtan and Yoga Fest of 2009. This should be a weekend of bliss and bhav. (I hear them throw that word around – all research points to bhav meaning “devotional feeling”.)

With so many wonderful hosts around the world, travel is a loving and easy experience.
It is with immense bhav that I invite you to visit me at my well-positioned flat a mile from the beach in Venice, California.

May your year be filled with love and laughter to break the mold.
May you find yourself doing at least one thing you have always dreamed of.

*I am off on a 2 week adventure to London, Amsterdam and Paris. In preparation for this trip, I pulled a dusty script down off the shelf, a script entitled Bambi's Box.

I played Bambi live on stage for the better part of 10 years, during which time she accrued lots of fans, scored rave reviews and captured a win at the 15 Minutes of Fem talent showcase.

Bambi is now getting a once over, comeuppance, spit shine and new hair-do (literally). We'll see how 5 days of frolicking in Netherland tulips transforms our long silent heroine.

Powering Down 2006

Hello Everyone,
I must begin this year's holiday communiqué with a declaration.
***After 6 years of eagerly awaited star-citing reports, I will no longer be name-dropping Hollywood Entertainment Superstars (H.E.S.). I've lived in the City of Angels for 13.5 years and in such time have acquired a number of close friends and acquaintances who are HES. It's not that I'm excluding them, just that I will now refer to them as Tom and Lily, Kiefer and Angelina (etc). I will continue to feed your hunger by alerting you when I rub elbows with Nobel/Pulitzer Prize Winners, Politicians and crime-free Athletes of note.***

Now to the meat of the missive!

Looking back on 2006 I am reminded of a ride they used to have at Lakeside Amusement Park in Roanoke, Virginia called "Cloud 9." I'm reminded not of the intended ecstasy, but of the potential nausea. Cloud 9 went around and around and around, while you were standing, strapped against the wall, centrifugal force holding you in. Then it lifted you straight up so you could spin horizontally too while you tried to focus on the red of the Confederate Flag on the T-shirt of the boy across from you so's you wouldn't loose your lunch.
Yep, 2006 has been a lot like Cloud 9.

Here are 10 Grounding Moments of Note in an otherwise Cloud 9-esque year.

1. Being present for the birth of Aiden Samuel Bruggeman on April 18th, 2006.
If you could steal him off the page, I know you would. He looks cute, but trust me, HE'S HEAVY!

2. Motorcycle burn in Naples.
Last June, Mom and I did the AIDS Ride together. This year, a 1-week writing retreat in the Tuscan hills above Florence with writing coach Maia Danziger, who besides being HES, is an author. So the namedrop is kosher. Here I am relaxing & writing.

Here's the African Dance Troup I made relatively HES when I wrote them into the Italian Vacation Slideshow I performed around Los Angeles.

So, get to the moto burn you say... post retreat I did some solo traveling. To...

~Rimini, the seaside birthplace of Federico Fellini (imagine Coney Island on steroids) during the World Cup. I watched the US/Italy 1/1 tie game at a little beachside fish café, all the while quelling my biological knee-jerk pro-US cheers.

~Roma, alive! So alive.

~and Napoli, I took a day trip to Naples for pizza where pizza was born. I love showing people the motorcycle burn I got from that trip. Only one person has pointed out that the burn is on the back of my right calf and that exhaust burns should be on the left. Eureka! I got this burn from walking past a motorcycle, and now you too know the truth. I assure you, a walking burn does not hurt any less.

3. The death of two great men I met while running Ability Arts, the charity for persons with disabilities. Walter Crowder...

4. and Michael Richard. (Different guy, blind photographer and musician.)
I really can't believe they're gone. They touched my life so profoundly in their love for art, music and life itself.

5. LOVE at the Mirage, go see it!
I was in Vegas 4 times in 06, which may have something to do with the Cloud 9 Effect. During the December trip I saw the amazing new Cirque du Soleil show set entirely to Beatles music. This was part of a 3-day adventure, celebrating cousin Laura G's 21st birthday.

6. Moving into my office in Santa Monica.
As I type, I'm overlooking the entire city. On clear days I see the Hollywood sign from my 14th floor office. And my dining room at home, is now a dining room :) Many thanks and much love to my officemate Bart.

7. Teaching publicly.
As part of the new course I created for actors and directors, 'Mastery', I open the class to the public once every six weeks. The first time I did it I was suprisingly nervous. The second time I must have been nervous too cause I said the F-word a lot without meaning to. I like teaching and my students really grow a lot right in front of my eyes. I guess that Masters Degree is paying off.

8. Recess Alumni Show during Parents Weekend at GW.
Remember NO TIME, the comedy group I helped found in college? It's still going on the campus under the name 'Recess'. A handful of the performers walked in and saw me chilling on the couch during rehearsal. One young man did a double take and said, "Oh, I thought you were somebody's Mom."
GROUNDING!

9. Electric City.
On November 4th I launched Electric City, a new political comedy event.

That's me with about half of the rockstar comics from Electric City.

Props to Todd Gallopo and his team at Meat and Potatoes. Todd is a childhood friend I hadn't seen since the mid-eighties who it turns out moved to LA the same time I did. Before Meat and Potatoes came on board, Electric City was just a good idea, once they added this...it really started rolling.

10. Larry Moss' intensive.
I spent 4 days with the acting teacher who energizes me in my craft. This man has been repeatedly thanked by actors and actresses in their Oscar speeches. Mostly what I learned is that it's time for me to love again. So as training for new love, I start a dog walking position at the animal shelter on January 1st.

You gotta' start somewhere.

I beg of you - reduce your expectations NOW. I know I've regaled you with belly laughs and chilling gasps in the not too distant holiday past, but this year - yes finally THIS YEAR - I made an unabashed, fender-smashed, delicious deal with the devil.

The devil he came, that's right he came on down to me and he said,
"Andy. I will give you a sick dope-hype crazy-ass year of miracles and firsts IF and only if, you do exactly as I say. And I say, change your name to Andrea and gimme the pea-sized part of your brain that makes you funny."

I winced, I blanched, my tic kicked in and then I heard myself begin, "What the hell Beels-a-B. Show me the monnnnn-EY!"

(I get my humor back in 2 days - I could have waited till then to write the letter but F that - it's time to put 005 to rest.)

Top 10 Sick Dope-Hype Happenings in the life of ANDREA ShreeGoddess Mobile Media Junkie Jew...

1. AIDS Ride - Rode my Sister-in-law Marnie's bike down the coast - San Francisco to LA in 7 days. With 1599 other riders, mostly men in dresses - what a blast!!! We raised 6.8 mil to help end this global affliction. Mom came too :)

2. Saw Cirque Du Soleil - I played a great game around dating this year and one of my dates was a trip to Vegas to see "O". O is right - O was it amazing, better than Cats, I'd see it again and again. Not kidding.

3. I was potty trained! Can I sit in the front seat now?!

4. I worked as a stand-in for Brooke Burke on Rockstar INXS this summer. This is where celebrity sightings of the year come in. I met Dave Navarro, Brooke of course, INXS and Marty Casey of the Lovehammers who can have my baby - he is a human beyond compare. Also - Coolio spilled champagne on me last week - he gets an honorable mention. What's up with all the rockstars?

5. Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson sent a donation to Ability Arts which officially got it's 501c3 (tax-exempt status) this year. There I go name-dropping again.

6. Todd and Maury Pruner had a baby and instead of waiting for him to be scarred by girl-throws in fifth grade - went ahead and named him Linkous Alvin so people could start making fun of him immediately. Love you Link!

7. Became a home owner. The Shreeman's now own property in West Hollywood. It's kinda great. I get so excited to come home everyday. The plan is to turn this into a sweet international trading pad. Know anyone in Tokyo?

8. Produced my first film.

9. Won an award for my new mobile media company, Mobile Magic Studios. We make "mobisodes" (1 minute long episodic content) for cell phones. Got our first distribution deal with Fun Little Movies (Channel 19 on the Sprint Deck).

10. I got liposuction in my ankles. I almost put this as number 9, but it's so much better than the award - you can't imagine the shame of tire-sized ankles. Finally, my thighs are rubbing together again!

There's so much to tell you about working on Rockstar INXS all summer and producing a film that's being submitted to Sundance...I've got great pix too which will have to wait cause...

I am in an incredible dream right now.

What follows may all seem par for the ShreeWoman course to you, but I assure you everything included here is a mega breakthru for me and it's the beginning of the life I've always imagined for myself.

I'm leaving for San Francisco in the morning to attend the Mobile Entertainment Summit. About 3 months ago, someone I've worked with repeatedly in the entertainment industry sent an email saying they were jumping into the cell phone entertainment world and were looking for people to create short films. I pondered putting together a team of writers for him and realized that I could actually put together my own production company.

I invited a friend of mine, Meredith, from Landmark Education to be my business partner and we leapt into production on ShreeTV - The 1 Minute Movie Studio.
We created 3 new Mobile series, they're like tv shows but the episodes are 1 minute long and we now have 15 episodes. The shows are called Trailer Trash Diaries, Aww Nuts and COPS: Excuses. They're fun, physical, smart and really look good. We said that we would enter iHollywood's Mobile Entertainment Competition and win it.

I found out this afternoon that we are one of 5 finalists in the contest. We put together a business plan to launch the first year of production and we are meeting with venture capitalists during our trip to San Francisco.

I'm totally blown away by this adventure, by the talented people I am now working with, by the fact that I created it all and by the power of my word. This is all a result of the year-long class I am in at Landmark called The Team Management and Leadership Program.

I've never felt more perfectly suited for a career. I am expressing myself as a writer, actress and producer all at once. I also own everything that occurs. I know I am responsible for every aspect of the job whether I am the one executing it or not. I get that I am guided, that this is not about me, that people are experiencing their own gifts by participating. It's quite magical.

Oh and, I'm calling myself Andrea now. It's new and I still love people to call me whatever they wish, but adding Andrea to the mix is making a huge difference in my life.

REMEMBER LUNCH IN OUR ORANGE CAFE?

The lunchrooms of my day...

At Mount Vernon we were in the basement.
Cool halls and TB shots in the library.
An oak tree outside Mrs Geib's 1st grade where we were forced to say the pledge
and sing Christmas songs
even if we were atheist or Jewish.

Each person must sing their song.
Each home contains its values
spoken and not.
This home bred one rich conservative and one hippy poet.
Each home breeds alignment and rebellion.
Each home sends its children to the orange cafes of teaching collectives.
State run babysitting where unchecked ideas from other homes are passed like virus and brought home to the horror of diligent, hardworking, good-thinking folk.

In orange cafes I made my first dollar, collecting trays when lazy lunchers lounged.
In orange cafes I passed my first note -
"Billy said yes"
"Susie's in love"
"Tuesday after school behind the gym to peek into each other's ideas"

In orange cafes I roamed from table to table, vagabond child searching for creed - are you my family - are you my friend - are you my posse to the bitter end?
In orange cafes I sipped tea with lovers.
In orange cafes I sold my first painting.
In orange cafes I read notice of jobs and couches
of parties and causes.
In orange cafes I built my first organ and played for tips and tangoed with keys.

Remember lunch in our orange cafe?
When all time stopped and you asked to borrow my salt
and the man behind the counter laughed.
You sat down and told me my search was over.
You tilted your chin
and peered toward the door.
You signed my petition
and love was born
for the last time.
Now we paint our breakfast room orange and teach our children the values they will rebel against.
Isn't life sweet.
Isn't life ripe.
Each morning we share our orange cafe.

It's Not the Destination...Indeed it IS the Journey!

hello hello!

I am back from the great beyond - back from the tushy aches and squeaky brakes of AIDS/LifeCycle 2005.

What a supreme adventure!

My mother Karen came too - she was a up at 5am everyday and back at 7pm having set up and served lunch for 1600 sweaty cyclists.

My biggest breakthru and greatest success came on Day 2, my first Century (hundred consecutive miles).
At about mile 30 i was having visions of the Holocaust and hiding my crying baby so we could all make it out safely. I was thinking I could not make it another moment and would clearly have to be swept into camp by the Grim Sweeper.
When at Rest Stop 2 I ran into John Hearne, a guy I'd met right as we were pulling out of Daly City the morning before.
He suggested we ride together and I spent the first 20 minutes voicing my discomfort and then we chatted, and then we enjoyed the view, the roadside farmers, the rolling hills, and then we played a game and then I got it... I was not meant to do this or anything else ALONE. That together we venture through this challenge and every other. And what seems like a struggle, can in the company of others be just a thing we do - just a thing to celebrate being alive and being human and having a spirit so vital it will not be stopped by fear and loneliness.
How boring my trip would have been on the search for camp everyday. Especially since I was on a mountain bike.

I left alone, we came back together.

And I learned a lot about HIV and it's saturation around the globe. It is truly a global affliction that is not being attended to. We raised 6.8 Million Dollars - that should attend to something.
On the ride there were (HIV) POSITIVE PEDDLERS who were so inspiring.

I became The Girl with the Golden Spokes. As people passed me on the early part of the hills, wide tires and all, I got so many compliments on my GOOD LOOKIN' bike! And I thanked them on the last sixth of the hill where I LOVED to turn on the juice and press past them.

Take it on, whatever it is, whatever you think you can't do, DO IT! BE IT!
Don't wait, because as my new friend Ray says, that opportunity may never come again.

The CALM before the RIDE

I have a semblance of a bike.
I have a camelback and some shoes missing a clip.
I wear Shawn Brown's helmet and listen to the IPOD my brother and sister in law sent me for my birthday.

Life is such a gift.
I got that riding.

There are people who have contributed to this experience that make me weep.
Beth Schueler and her husband Fritz for early tunings and my first pair of bike shorts.
Karen Shreeman who made every week Christmas week with new gear and letters of her own gathering the donations to meet my minimum.
Joel Shapiro who hosted the fundraiser at his amazing solar powered theater in Venice, then turned around and dropped a fat donation to LA Gay and Lesbian center.
Veronica Brown who got my heartfelt thank you letter right to Anthony of the Red Hot Chili Peppers - their music has inspired up many a ridiculous hill.
Fred Rubenstein who kept me on my commited schedule by treating me to a torturous 90 minute spin class in San Francisco.
John Harakuni who put the rad yellow spoked carbon wheels and slicks on my bike yesterday and hung with two treks up PV.
Abby Fifer who dropped the first $20 on the ride with the blind passion of giving.
James Pluta whose sleeping back and pad are stuffed in his duffel waiting for me to add my six pieces of clothing and sunblock.
Kirk Nozaki who praises me every time I see him for my commitment.

I am alive, therefore I ride.
It's a turning point for sure.

I stand on the edge of great endeavor, knowing that this journey represents my everything. If I can ride 585 miles, I can be who I've always dreamed myself to be. And the one thing that stands out today is being an actress.

Facing the dream of a lifetime. Making it real. And starting where I need to start.

Okay - I am high-teching it this year. (If you're a true techie, please don't spill the beans on how low-tech this actually is. If I got wind of your opinion I might have a breakdown, as crafting this page has been much like using a 386 in 1987.)

In the interest of time (not wasting yours that is) I will resort to the ever-handy “Top Ten” Holiday Letter template.

TOP TEN things that made Andy Shreeman's 2004 feel like five years...

10. One delicious month in COSTA RICA
It was actually 3 weeks, but in case you're only reading headlines, I want to ensure your jealousy. 6 posts follow this Holiday Letter that chronicle my trip. What kind of life are we leading that makes everyone say, "You're so lucky, I wish I could do that!" In the immortal words of the goddess Nike, "Just Do It!"

9. I surfed
In Santa Monica, not Costa Rica. My sweet friend Blair Calderhead begged me to come out for months and finally in August, I donned a wet suit and let him push me into a few waves. After which, I blissfully continued my Sunday morning at the Farmer's Market and bumped into the AIDS/LifeCycle table. Wanna take a ride?

8. The launch of Ability Arts
I run a charity now. For persons with disabilities. And it is incredible work. If you click on the title of this letter it'll take you to Ofoto where you can see pics of these amazing performers with Cerebral Palsy, Brain Tumors, Arthritis, Blindness, Schizophrenia and a whole lot of commitment!

7. A weekend trip with my brother Josh
We met in Austin, Texas where Todd Pruner was getting hitched to the angelic Maury Sullivan. Saw a slew of very intelligent, witty friends from high school and spent a lot of time shopping for Italian jeans and motorcycles (also Italian).

6 through 4 is acting and writing stuff that made me smarter, funnier and better connected. And includes this year’s most memorable celebrity encounter. Hold on to your sweaters girls, I met Gedde Watanabe! That’s right, Long Duck Dong from 16 Candles. He is extremely cool, and when I thanked him for the years of joy he has given me, (he is by far the most quoted movie character in my vernacular) Gedde giggled with glee.

3. The Chili Peppers
I have one favorite band. And I've always thought I would see them in a very special, intimate way for the first time. On October 15th I attended “Take Back the Senate” where Tom Harkin, Hillary Clinton, Barak Obama, Barbara Boxer and Howard Dean rallied 2000 Santa Monicans to take off for swing states. When the Peppers made it on stage, I lost myself. People kept asking if I was okay. I assured them I was not, and that was as it should be.

2. Barak Obama
Words are useless here. He’s like the Beatles to me. This man makes me cry and shake. Listen to him – he’s breathtaking.

And the unrefuted #1 Event of 2004 -
4th of July in the Sky!

5 minutes after I showed up to my friend Beth Schueler-Greve’s for patriotic shrimp, I was whisked away by a complete stranger and her two passengers to watch fireworks from 1000 feet in the air. (Mind you the legal height for fireworks is 850.) She was a little hot rod in a Piper who took us all up and down the coast, circling explosions and then across the city where every barrio sparkled in celebration.

I'm so incredibly grateful for the people I've met and worked with this year. And for the many people who contributed to Ability Arts - please know, you've changed lives.

Chapter's End

I have never experienced such a quick and definitive life change as I did in the beautiful country of Costa Rica.
I felt so nutured and free there. And I can recall this feeling instantaneously by closing my eyes, seeing those ancient Pshote tress and hearing the bath water ocean call me to peace.

Here are my lessons:
1. Prosperity can not co-exist with shame.
2. There's peace in being unattached.
3. I am worth more than a $7 room.
4. Chaos and not knowing is a great space of all possibility.
5. I am uniquely qualified to serve humanity as an actress.
6. It's better to ask "How can I help?" then, "What's in it for me?"

I am now hiding out in the United States, easing myself back into society at a Costa Rican rate.

I am looking toward 2005 - A great year to be alive!

Contemplating Career, Family and Love and wishing you grace and prosperity in all you create.

Heaven on Earth

It does exist and it´s called Santa Teresa. The trees are ancient, the sand is white and the waves keep coming.
This is a beloved hang out for surfers with months to burn, which is I´m beginning to understand, part of the surfer way.
A sweet mix of Israeli´s, Tico´s and Americans + the international travellers and the occasional Italian business owner (guess what business) - Santa Teresa is gorgeous, peaceful and unpaved which also means relatively untrafficked.
It´s muddy too which is a blast, little babies plastered with mud and sand.
Rumor has it there is also a river of cocaine flowing across la playa which causes numerous petty thefts in the low season and lots of happy Tico´s in the high season.
For me this has been a demand for peeling the layers, for turning off my busy little brain and enjoying.
Now I´ve been great at being in the moment, heck, I have a Master´s Degree in it. But this is a whole new level. And I got it. I wept when I reached the sands here. Pristine and powerful.
Come to Santa Teresa - it´s magnetic - literally, people pass through and get stuck for years.

Turkey and Lesbians

What else is there?!
Two nights ago I went to La Avispa - the gay bar in San Jose.
The last Wednesday of every month is women only. And Costa Rican women, well, I don´t want to generalize, I saw all types. But I was surprised no one asked me to dance. I didn´t feel 100% connected to them, I think that may be because I´m not a Lesbian. And back to my generalization, women here are subtle, even shy, not aggressive at all.
I´m sad to report there were fewer than 400 women present, I think it was more like 150. But it was incredibly wonderful to see all these women paired off and movin to a Latin rhythm.
I did ask a woman to dance and she was rockin. The whole bar was clapping for her and hooting, I´ve never been in that position, and let me tell you, I could not move like that, I tried, and played the geek. She had talent. As one woman said to me, ¨You have to bring your whole body here.¨
Then there was last night. Thanksgiving in Cariari. I add this to my ´ironic holiday list´ which includes Passover in Paris and a Yom Kippur Cattle Drive.
It was one of the biggest Thanksgivings I´ve been to - great food, passionate political discussion, all in Spanish of course, and I just watched the emotions.
One thing I love about being with people who are all speaking another language is knowing when to laugh. It doesn´t matter what language you speak, you can feel it. Sometimes it´s in the rhythm of the language, sometimes it´s in the person who´s talking and you can just feel the humor well up. I love that.
I´m writing a ton here, and fully inspired. But I think this phase is ending, I´m looking toward the beaches now.

The Road to Freedom

The road to freedom is paved with generosity and courage.
Well, I made a break from La Fortuna.
It was a minor eruption which directly follow a major eruption in Manuel Antonio (6.2 earthquake - in La Fortuna it felt like a 4.4).
My minor eruption included some yelling, a lot of tears on my part and an agreement that I would leave the company I was working for and the home I had been given to stay in IMMEDIATELY.
And so, the real journey has begun.
I now find myself in Cariari on the outskirts of San Jose in the guest house of a rockin Panamanian lesbian artist. I´m paying next to nothing and in exchange I am helping her serve Thanksgiving dinner to 17 relatives, Sela lived in the states for 39 years and when she left Uncle Sam in 2000 (re: she immediately recognized signs of election fraud having lived with it all her life in Panama) she brought back two yearly traditions, July 4th and Thanksgiving.
Needless to say, I am steeped in artistic inspiration and material from our conversations and I am typing like a fiend on several projects.
I am free once again and reminded of the importance of being in agreement, which is a great remedy for control.
FYI Sela´s home is open to female travellers only and is a GREAT deal - she is also refurbishing a beach house in northern Guanacaste and will offer the cheapest best sitch for a quick week to Costa Rica any woman (or up to 4 women) could imagine. She also throws in the use of her car. The whole package is around $300.
Well, my time on line is limited here - but stay tuned, I will soon share intimate details of a Costa Rican Thanksgiving and a trip to San Jose to meet 400 lesbians.

Canopy Tour 2004

Today I went on Arenal Paraiso's Canopy Tour, the guides were awesome - the zip lines rocked, and I got to do some light gymnastics on the wire. Hopefully Don (I think that's his name) Ripp will email me the pictures that the hotel rep took. I was hamming it up.
One woman on the trek had a heck of a time, slammed her knee, was a little wrecked at the end. She did that on line 3 and there were 11 total.
The best one was right over the river.
I'm starting to get it here.
I am really surprised at what a difficult transition it's been for me. I don't have the autonomy I usually have and many of the employees are annoyed when I speak English. Plus, no car and no real plan to get one.
I am very happy today though, armed with my best phrase "Como se dise..." (sp?) "how do you say..." and my wide-eyed willingness to learn. It takes a lot of concentration and commitment. I get tripped up speaking English now, which is probably a great sign.

I'm taken again by the role of tourism here. Most of the owners are American. All of the builders and workers are Tico. There is almost a distance in the way we are experiencing nature on these treks. I am so used to being IN the earth, not strapped to a conveyor belt and riding through it. It's Jungle Disney with helmets.
I did hear of a cool village in the mountains where a group of mostly American ecologists/doctors are re-foresting - living sans electricity, all solar, goat fed etc. My inner-hippy is intrigued.

I spent money today for the first time. Now I feel like I'm contributing, and that is part of what's altering my perception. And I spent it in colones - which is totally not necessary para the economy, dollars are more prevelant at the hotels, but it makes me feel better. The reason I'm going all colone, is that when I was at the post office and they told me the total in colones, all I had was dollars and they rounded up, WAY UP.

I was invited to the disco tonight, but I think I'm opting for the 5 am hike.

Alright, I'm a short show girl, or as the Bard would say, "Brevity is the soul of wit!"

Buenas de Volcan Arenal

Well, I'm here.
And Costa Rica is so close, it's mind boggling, 3 hours from New York, it was a 5 hour flight from LA.
I was so taken by the clouds as the flight landed, cumulo spectacles. Thick and delicious.
I know something is afoot here, but the town of La Fortuna is sad. It's that balance of travel, travel industry in depressed countries. I'm happy to see that locals are benefitting, I know our company in particular is providing good jobs. But I don't yet see how one can discover Costa Rica with out paying for each step. $40 for a guided walk, $10 to enter the national park, $16 for a breath of our jungle fresh air.
There are other places in this country that carry more charm I'm hoping, my sites are set on the Osa Peninsula, but La Fortuna does have a great view of the volcano, which no doubt will erupt while I'm here - details as they spark.
I'm a bit trapped in La Fortuna for work, but the folks I am working with are great - young - talented adventure guides, they are patient with my pathetic attempts to make jokes in broken Spanish.
Here's an even more hilarious note on that. About 50 years ago I acted in an educational video, teaching Spanish, I brought it along to help me learn, I plan to learn Spanish from my Gringa self.
I did do the Pure Trek tour - it's rappelling down waterfalls and it's pretty amazing, I was a bit frustrated at my lack of dexterity - I'm sure the next time out I'll be a wild goat on a string.
The best material I have so far is my boss who stresses like a female Spanish speaking Woody Allen. Cynthia is a powerful woman with a booming business in a machismo culture. Kudos chica!

I've really been questioning my reason for being here. Such are all adventures of the sort. The musings will continue - the answers are unfolding.
